Anyone recall this game?

I have a Sirius 1, made in UK by ACT (in US known as Victor 9000) with
many floppies containing diverse software, incl. a text adventure game
called The Island of Artuan Adventure. Unfortunately, the Sirius no
longer works but finding this group has made me wonder if I may be able
to enjoy playing the game again.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

A little googling turned up an Apricot disk image at
http://www.actapricot.org/disks/apr00254.dsk. It's a bit of an obscure
format, so I've extracted the files from the image and put them up at
http://www.bespokerealities.com/artuan.zip. The good news is that the
Apricot was sufficiently PC-compatible for the game to run under
ordinary MS-DOS: just run advenioa.exe . I'm not sure whether it will
run under Windows or not -- I run Linux -- though the chances are it
probably will. If not, I've run it successfully using the DosBox DOS
emulator (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net).

Hope this helps,

Peter

Hi Peter

What a quick response! It sounds as though you already have gone to a
lot of trouble on my account... thanks so much.

I found the actapricot file also, but had no idea anything could be
done with it! The little bits of it that I could read did remind me of
the quirky responses the game made to my "inputs" - which made me like
the game so much.

It's amazing to think that I may be able to play the game (and perhaps
this time actually finish) some 20 years later!!

However, I have to profess my relative ignorance of downloading from
the internet (I am more the "place tape / disk / CD in computer" type).

I know this is a further imposition on your time, but would it be
possible for you to explain in very simple language what steps I need
to take to play the game on a computer using Windows 98 / XP (am
currently using XP, but at home have 98)?

It might just make someone else who does not have a great deal of
computing knowledge think about have a go as well! That would be good
because I know that when I get to the big door in the game which can
only be opened by solving the puzzle I am going to need all the help I
can get...

Thank you again.

On Windows 98 / XP:

* Unzip the files into a folder (using a program like Winzip) e.g.,
C:\Artuan
* Open the folder you've created (Artuan)
* Double-click on the file named advenioa.exe
* A black box should appear with the opening text for the game.

Hope that helps!

Note that when the game is run like this, it doesn't clear the screen -
instead you just get a left-arrow and an E. If you go to the effort of
installing APE <http://www.ansible.co.uk/ai/ape.html> and configuring Artuan
within APE, then it looks a bit nicer, but you may not find this worth the
hassle.

(ANSI.SYS or NNANSI.COM won't help, by the way, because ESC E isn't an
ANSI escape code. VT52.SYS might, if you can find a copy, but finding and
installing that is going to be even more hassle than APE).

Hi Peter, Arnel and John

THANK YOU - I've got The Island of Artuan Adventure working!!

I am so grateful for all your help:

Peter for finding and placing it on the website
Arnel for your helpful instructions
and to John: I haven't yet bothered about clearing the screen - but I
might do one day when I get stuck playing the game (...and then I can
brag to others about being able to do that!!).

;-)

Now it's up to me to find the Orb of Power - will I get past the big
door this time?

I'll let you know...

Best wishes and thanks again.

Thanks for that, John. No wonder I was still seeing the <-E characters
on my XP box even after running NNANSI.COM. I think it does work for
Win98 machines though.

Weird. I'll try what you suggest and see what happens.

Hi there

Having a great time with Island of Artuan Adventure, got through the
big doors and found, but haven't yet got, the Orb of Power (age and
experience are still worth something then!!).

Is anybody else playing it by any chance - I could do with a hint on
how to overcome the siren... my singing did not make her commit suicide
out of envy.

Seriously, thanks to everyone who helped me again - I am so enjoying
it.

All the best,

BB

Thanks, Stu.

I have posted a question on Casa - maybe I can encourage someone to try
the game too.

Liked the look of Casa, I'll be visiting again.
